Symposium: Studying audiovisual media experiences (University of Groningen)
A symposium on interdisciplinary empirical research methods in film and media studies.
Date: 5 March, 14:00-18:30.
Location: University of Groningen, Collaboratory A, Harmonie Building (Oude Kijk in ‘t Jatstraat 26, Groningen)
This symposium explores innovative and interdisciplinary research approaches to studying lived experiences in the fields of film and media studies. The event brings together international researchers working with both qualitative and quantitative methods of investigating experiences of film and other contemporary audiovisual media production and reception.
The aim of the symposium is to promote an interdisciplinary dialogue about the methodological and epistemological challenges and advantages of various ways of studying media experiences. The programme includes presentations and discussions by researchers in various stages of their careers, from various disciplines, and with diverse topics of expertise. Students and researchers from various disciplinary backgrounds with a general interest, or with a more concrete aim to apply such methodologies in their own research, are cordially invited to participate.
The speakers will cover a wide range of topics including temporal and rhythmical experience in viewing audiovisual media, film viewers’ embodied responses, the creative processes of professional filmmakers, viewers’ emotional engagement with fictional narrative horror media, and audience reception of slow cinema.
Central to all these investigations are the methodological challenges of exploring the perceptual, bodily, emotional, and cognitive dimensions of personal, subjective experiences of both media users and producers. The talks address issues like the reliability of verbal reporting on lived experience, the possibility of integrating qualitative and quantitative data types, the benefits and limitations of various methods, and the best practices for capturing human experiences across various platforms and contexts for production and reception of audiovisual media.
Attendance is free, but please register for the event here.
