This master class explores the conceptual and methodological challenges associated with recent scholarly efforts to understand the complex relationships between global streaming platforms and national media industries. Through industrial practices like commissioning content or forming partnerships with local television providers and broadcasters, platforms like Netflix provide opportunities to interrogate issues of culture and power that have long been central to the field of Media Studies. At the same time, the global distribution of national content indicates the emergence of changing industrial practices that necessitates rethinking the consequences associated with transnational video flows.
After introductory remarks by Professor Amanda Lotz, participants will have the opportunity to ask questions about their current research or Professor Lotz’s recent work. A general discussion of streaming video in the context of national media markets will follow.
This master class is primarily directed to doctoral students in Media, Communication and Cultural Studies at Dutch Universities. Interested students of Research Master Programmes and Early Career Researchers in the same area and interested colleagues are also welcome to register.
Amanda D. Lotz is a professor and leader of the Transforming Media Industries research program in the Digital Media Research Centre at Queensland University of Technology. She is the author, coauthor, or editor of ten books that explore television and media industries.
