How do you work? Methodology & theory in Media Studies
As researchers, we are trained to present the results of our research activities in conferences and to peers – but we hardly exchange information on the tools that help(ed) us getting there. This network-day is designed to exchange on our experiences of doing research in media studies.
Even for PhD’s in media studies, there are myriad computer applications, besides word processors and (Excel-) spreadsheets, that are helpful in writing and data organization. However, getting to know a new application is often a time consuming enterprise. Timely try-outs that end in the realization that a particular application is not useful are frustrating experiences that can easily be avoided by sharing knowledge on work-flows with fellow PhD’s.
This event consists of two parts: a workshop-session, followed by a drinks reception. The workshop is meant to share experiences on the use of computer applications in your media studies PhD workflow. Input from your own experiences is encouraged, both relating to applications you considered useful and useless. The workshop will start with a short introduction on computer programs and applications. In the second part, there are parallel sessions on specific applications hosted by a PhD ‘expert’ in the software tool discussed.
There will be presentations on Zotero (managing and organizing literature and bibliography), Sente (organizing literature, source material and notes), Scrivener (composing and structuring a first draft of a long document ), Atlas.Ti (organizing interviews) as well as any application you wish to present.
The day will conclude with a networking “borrel”, which you can also attend without taking part in the workshop, giving room to further exchange on what “doing research” means for you.
Registration
The seminar is open to RMA’s and PhDs. Please register before 13 February, 2014, via the RMeS website. You do not have to present to take part in this seminar, nor do you have to be an expert in computer applications. If you have experience with an application that you would like to share, please send an email to Sarah (s.dellmann@uu.nl) and give the name and type of application you would like to talk about. Please do so before January 24th, 2014. This will allow us to present the definitive programme of this event during the Winter school in Nijmegen.
The final list of programs that will be presented during this event, will be circulated via the RMeS mailing list in the first week of February.
Please bring a laptop and ensure that it has access to the Eduroam network (check beforehand with the ICT service at your university if you do not know how that works). If you do not have or cannot bring a laptop, please inform Sarah (s.dellmann@uu.nl) and we will organize some.
