Based on almost a decade and a half of qualitatively studying online participation, particularly on social media but also in semi-private/semi-publics meso news-spaces, I will share a practical workshop on how to do qualitative content analysis on social media.
We will consider aspects such as the advantages and limitations of analyzing social media content, as well as practical steps such as sampling and data collection, data analysis, and research ethics. Additionally, I will present the concept of meso news-spaces and consider the advantages and limitations in studying participation in online spaces that lie between the private and public realms. Students are welcome to prepare by reading the two short suggested pieces below. If you have a topic in mind related to digital participation that you would like to study through qualitative content analysis, please come ready to share and receive practical advice.
