Reel Israel: Israeli / Palestinian Cinema and TV

Intensive four-day course by Dr. Orna Raviv

This intensive four-day course examines Israeli television and cinema and some glimpse of Palestinian productions. We will discuss the historical, political and social context of Israel and some Palestinian TV and cinema industries. We will look into specific genres and explore their religious, political and cultural backgrounds and how they reflect issues of gender, ideology, and memory. We will explore how local themes and protagonists manage to appeal also to international audiences. The course is designed for PhD candidates, Research Master students, film students and interested master students in Film/TV/Media Studies in the Netherlands. Interested colleagues are also invited to attend the workshop. The workshop involves frontal teaching, group work, screenings, as well as reading and watching assignments.

Workshop Schedule
  • April 19-20: Part 1 – Documentary Cinema
  • April 21-: Part 2 – Narrative Films
  • April 22: Part 3 – TV Series.
  • An additional meeting on Zoom will be proposed for those who would like to write a final paper.
  • Participants may register for one, two or all three parts of the course.

Dr. Orna Raviv

Dr. Orna Raviv is a director and producer of fictional and documentary films. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Cinema (1987), a MA degree cum laude in Philosophy (2007) and a  PhD in Philosophy, from Tel Aviv University (2015). Raviv is the author of Ethics of Cinematic Experience: Screens of Alterity (Routledge, 2019) and a winner of the Dan David Prize scholarship in the field of Cinema and Society. She teaches at Tel Aviv University and Shenkar College, and she is a Contributor Editor at Angelaki journal. She is the co-founder and organizer of the international conference on Israeli documentary cinema in Jerusalem: A Look from the Inside, a Look from the Outside. Her films have been screened in many film festivals and shown worldwide.
